Necessary contrasts, part two

Michael Demmons echoes Larry Elder regarding a lawsuit filed against Abercrombie and Fitch for not hiring ugly people.

That’s one issue, and I am fine with it. But I also know there are a LOT of good looking, very sexy black, Hispanic, and Asian men and women out there. If Abercrombie & Fitch is firing them because they are black, Hispanic, or Asian, then throw the book at them – unless they’re ugly – then that’s ok.

Listen. Abercrombie & Fitch has created an image for itself, and has been very successful because of it. If you don’t like that, go shop at Wal-Mart. You’ll find plenty of your ugly kin there.

Do you want a pimply kid with grimy hair to be selling the preppy clothes in your preppy store? Preppy apparel promoting a preppy look? Were I a hiring guy for A and F I wouldn’t. I doubt that racial lines are being drawn in terms of beauty, though I know quite a few people who think that A and F is “too white” for anyone else other that white people. Not true. Not that I’d bring myself to cough up forty bucks for a button-down shirt that looks like it was pulled out of a coffin, but I sure can carry it well.

A and F is a business trying to sell a product and an image. It is currently free to do so. It may be on the ass end of a lot of heat from all sorts of sources, but you have the right not to buy anything from them. In fact you even have the right to tell your children not to buy from them. You do not have the right to litigate them out of business using spotty accusations, nor do you have the right to run them out of business just because you don’t agree with the lifestyle A and F is promoting.

As for my title, just as a Miss Ugly is necessary to understand what Beauty can be, so it is in this case. Not everyone is beautiful. Not everyone has good looks. It may be in the eyes of beholders, but the beholden can either be misled, or lying. Besides, sometimes they’re not beholden at all.

*Oh, and if Christina Aguilera applied for work at A and F looking like this, I’d quit my job as hiring officer and delegate the difficult decision to higher ops. Or is there even a dilemma?
