Just passing through

And at night when you sleep
Do you dream I would be there
Just for a minute or two do you? — from Through With You by Maroon 5

I have come to accept, perhaps more than most people, the fact of life that people move in and out of each others’ lives. Immigration tends to do that.

Despite the promises to keep in touch, the shared experiences and the loyalties involved, people learn to grow independently of each other. It is an inevitability as true as day, and friendships based simply on the need to be with each other because either party is afraid of going through life without each other, are vampiric.

I think the word is co-dependent, but I doubt that it is the case all the time. Just that people are afraid, that’s all.

Having said our goodbyes, or having drifted silently apart, do we ever wonder about the other party? Even more, do we wonder if they ever wonder about us? Do we stop and think, “wouldn’t it be nice to be friends with them like it used to be?”

After a while of pondering one usually arrives at the conclusion that our roles in each others lives have become increasingly irrelevant. We do, however, carry the memory of the experience, the value of times together, and the lessons we learned from each other.

Could it be that outgrowing people without devaluing them is a sign of growth?

Good night, everyone.
