Publicly funded diet

Michael Demmons has an interesting observation on Food Stamps beneficiaries:
I’ve always had a distaste for the way food stamps – now called EBT cards – are handled. I remember last year, I was in a Kroger Supermarket buying a few things. I even wrote a post about it which I cannot find right now. In front of me was a guy in a leather jacket, leather pants, wearing a nice watch and several gold chains running his EBT Card through the machine. He was either fairly well off, or was a thief. But to me, someone like this having an EBT Card is a blatant misuse of the system. Yeah, he could have been buying the groceries for his poor sister. That would be fine (except that he should have been financially assisting his poor sister, but that’s another post.)
The thing is, he was buying name brand ice cream, potato chips, coke, and frozen pizza, if I remember correctly. In any case, there wasn’t one nutritious item in the lot. You do know who pays for this, don’t you? Yes. You. You either bought the guy’s poor sister, or more likely, the guy himself, party snacks for the evening.
I used to have party animal neighbors who let their kids run around in soiled clothes but made sure that their cars were in polished shape. I think I know what Michael felt that day in the supermarket. I think I do.
