Everyone’s war

Today’s events in Spain makes it all so clear that terrorism is everyone’s war and a cause for grief for everyone who isn’t a terrorist.

Says Michele: I watch the news (EuroNews has fantastic coverage) and listen to the reports and see the carnage and I feel so deeply for these people. Scenes of confusion, smoke clearing and people crying catch my heart and mind in a ways they never could before.

From Val Prieto:

The Spanish people deserve our support and solidarity, just as they supported our fight against terrorism after 9/11 and the continuing war on terror. Even though these bombings may not be directly linked with Al Qaeda or other related factions and may be part of an ongoing internal problem with the ETA, every freedom loving country of the world should stand with the Spanish government and her people to ensure swift justice and punishment of the guilty parties.

Today, we are all Spanish.

Sadly, Lair Simon — and there are folks just like him that I know of — thinks that grief is a zero-sum case. Since there is not enough grief in the media in the goings-on in Israel, he thinks that our sentiments are ad-hoc empty gestures of solidarity and flag-waving .

When I woke up this morning and I found out about these attacks from my friend via e-mail, the first thought that came into my mind was: “this cannot go on, anywhere.” When bus bombings and other terrorist attacks hit Manila or elsewhere in the Philippines, do I complain that there is not enough coverage by the news? Do I complain that not enough people grieve for them? Nevertheless, do I withold my grief and sympathy for the victims of terror anywhere?

One person, five people, a hundred, a thousand, three thousand, it doesn’t matter. One person killed in a terror attack is one person too much, and my grief and sympathy for that victim — or victims — are only “ad-hoc empty gestures of solidarity and flag-waving.”

Today I will be fair. Since I, and the media, including the blogosphere, mourns not enough for Israel’s plight, no one else deserves my grief and sympathy. Therefore today I grieve for no one. This isn’t everyone’s war, dear friends. This is no one’s war, it seems like it, unless you get hit by it yourself.

  • Grief, shock, anger… legitimate and healthy reactions.
The empty-headed, meaningless statements of “Everyone is a Spaniard” … not healthy.

  • Val Prieto says:

Laurence is basically calling me empty headed and thats fine with me. When 9/11 occurred, people from all the world stood by the US with their support, condolences, prayers, etc.. They were all Americans as they all felt our pain.

Im sorry that Simon’s pain and anguish and disgust and whatever else he feels prevents him from empathy toward the grief stricken. That seems to be a personal problem. I can assure you though, that I am glad I am not as hardened as he appears to be.

Laurence is entitled to his opinions and as such I woulndtt criticise him or call him as asshole or whatnot. But, he deliberately went out of his way to comment on entries where the writers actually felt solidarity with the people of Spain all because HIS Israel gets negative media response or none at all.

Heh. The first team to arrive in Spain to assist their ALLY was a forensic team from Israel. Methinks Lawrence and the likes are a small minority.
