I was inclined to assume incompetence over malice for Sandy Berger and his stuffed pants, until his socks were, reportedly, stuffed too. More than the matter of this matter, I find much more interesting the huge party (go through Doc Joyner’s links) we on the Right seem to be throwing over this. Let us stop and think for a minute here. Aside from the fact that Berger would be a criminal (had he deliberately removed those documents in question) there is little to celebrate over the loss of documents that may have helped us in the long run. Such documents may not have prevented the September 11 attacks — I am not that naive, mind you — but they could have helped in one way or another.
While we rejoice at the further discredit of Bill Clinton’s legacy (and I do; I would be a total hypocrite not to) and hammer on the fact that Berger now “informally advises” John Kerry, let us keep in mind what his actions — malicious, or inept, your choice — have done for all of us.
