Since yesterday there have been two issues that seem to have unhinged the most liberal of the liberals: first, Glenn Reynolds’ gun-support t-shirt, and Frank J.’s use of the word “monkey.” I attempt to aggregate:
-
Miss Juliette Ochieng lays the smack down on Steve Gilliard for taking issue with Frank’s use of the word “monkeys” as a racist codeword. Says Juliette: Only a racist would automatically think of race *whenever* monkeys are mentioned. Maybe the same kind of racist who automatically thinks of race when talking about fried chicken. Or Moo Shoo Pork. Or chinks in armor..

John Hawkins wonders:
But those quibbles aside, I have a very relevant question, that being “how do people this hypersensitive make it through the day”?
I mean do they refuse to play 8-Ball because it requires you to use a white ball to knock a black ball down into a hole? What about trash bags? Do they think it’s appropriate for a white guy to stuff garbage into a black trash bag or does that imply “something pretty dark and evil” too? Oh and don’t even get these guys started on the symbolism behind a white person eating blackberries or you’ll really get an earful!
Why, they go through life very, very carefully. So much so that they don’t end up doing anything of substance, which, upon further contemplation, is actually a good thing.

Eric Scheie wants none of it, but also notes:
And “diversity” is code language — every bit as much as the word “family.” Another one of those otherwise harmless words which has taken on new meaning thanks to political ideologues. The word deserves ridicule, and in precisely the way the T-shirt ridicules it. Many of those who shout about “DIVERSITY” would imprison people for owning guns just as certainly as many of their counterparts who shout “FAMILY” would imprison people for “sodomy.”
Well, hypocrisy and irony go hand in hand.

Finally, credit to Miss Kathy K. who got me on a collecting roll for links, even though these posts have been linked elsewhere.

You might like DC Thornton’s post: “Get A Grip, Duncan.” He’s getting the t-shirt. And just to upset Atrios’ bunch more, he’s going to buy another gun as well.

Well, I suppose I’m entitled to mention that I just wrote something about diversity which was inspired by the hooraw about the t-shirt, and I’m working on another one which, altho very tangential, is a response to the frothing about the NRA having been founded the year the KKK was outlawed.
